Fishing in the lakes of Garda Trentino

A paradise for angling in still waters

From carp fishing to the search for predatory fish, from catching white species to the search for lake trout, from boat fishing for whitefish to mice-tail fishing: the lakes of Garda Trentino are a paradise for stillwater anglers! Stroll along the shores, choose your favourite spot – in the shade of a tree or on the grass in the sunshine – and get ready for a new fishing adventure in the natural surroundings of Garda Trentino!

lake Lamar

With a depth of 16 metres, length of 450 metres and width of 130 metres, the sapphire waters of Lake Lamar are ideal both for fishing and for a photography course! This shaded oasis, surrounded by the green mountains and blue skies of Trentino, is ideal for fishing techniques of all kinds. Whether with minnows, wagglers or brightly coloured spinners, pike have always been fished in Lake Lamar – but perch and tench too thrive here! For more details about these clear waters at the foot of Monte Paganella, contact the Associazione Pescatori Dilettanti Trentini.

lake Cavedine

With a surface area of 1.1 km², a depth of 60 metres, a length of 600 metres and a location of 240 metres a.s.l., Lake Cavedine is surrounded by the moonscape of the Marocche Nature Reserve. With its walking and cycling routes, the lake is off the beaten track and far from the buzz of traffic. The most common fish species to be found there is the whitefish (or lavaret), which can weigh over 1.5 kilos – and sometimes considerably more! Fishing from the shore or from a boat? Whitefish can be caught from the shore using traditional “vertical” rods, or trotting from a boat. If you want to be sure of a catch, we recommend marking April, May and September on your calendar, as these are the best times of year! In addition to whitefish, the waters of Lake Cavedine also contain brown trout, perch, pike, chub, rudd, Italian nase, carp and tench. For further information contact the Associazione Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Basso Sarca, which has responsibility for the lake.

lake Lagolo

With a surface area of 0.19 km², a maximum depth of 8 metres and a length of 250 metres, Lake Lagolo is an inter-moraine lake fed by several springs close to its shores, as well as by underwater seepage. In summer this elliptical lake is ideal for swimming and admiring the Alpine scenery from a new perspective. But what of the fish species that live in this lake with its surrounding fields and coniferous forests? Brown trout, grayling, whitefish, pike and marble trout are all at home here: shaded by needle and beech forests, you can also fish for perch. If you want to spend an afternoon (or two) fishing here, contact the Associazione Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Basso Sarca.

lake Ledro

With a perimeter of 10 km, a surface area of 2,187 km² and a maximum depth of 48 metres, Lake Ledro is located 15 km west of Riva del Garda at 650 metres above sea level. Sailing, surfing, canoeing, swimming and fishing are all possible in the turquoise waters of the lake, which is among the cleanest in Trentino and welcomes sportspeople of all kinds. Fancy a jog? On the track that runs around the lake can be found runners and cyclists galore! And if you come out of season? Visit the Lake Ledro Pile-Dwelling Museum located on the eastern shore and learn all about life in the Bronze Age.
If you come armed with rod and reel, however, you will find yourself in a true fishing paradise! In these waters you will see trout, perch, bleak, whitefish, tench, pike and eels all swimming around! Lake Ledro is managed by the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Pescatori Valle Di Ledro: for more information, contact the association!

lago di Santa Massenza

With a surface area of 0.3 km² and a depth of 12 metres, Lake Santa Massenza has shores that are each special in their own way. The southern and western shores are easily accessible, while the eastern side is covered with vineyards and the northern shores are home to one of Italy’s largest hydropower stations. A short canal, over which the Gardesana Occidentale road passes, joins the southern part of Lake Santa Massenza to Lake Toblino – and we recommend you take your camera with you, as the views from here are pure poetry! The power station inlet means that the water temperature rarely exceeds 16°C, so we advise against swimming. Trout fishing, on the other hand, is very popular, while whitefish, char and pike of all sizes also abound in these waters. For more details contact the Associazione Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Basso Sarca!

lake tenno

With a surface area of 0.2 km² and a maximum depth of 50 metres. Lake Tenno is located 570 metres above sea level. Reaching this beautifully round body of water requires you to descend a medieval stairway: in summer, you can even reach the island in the middle of this turquoise-blue lake by walking over the white stones on the bottom. But in autumn, once the rainy season is over, you can merely see a few leaves sprouting from the middle of the lake. By autumn, in fact, the water level is 15 metres higher than that in summer – so best get your waders on! Around 2,550 kilos of adult brown trout are released into Lake Tenno every fishing season: in addition to trout, you can also fish for chub, whitefish and tench in its waters, which are managed by the Associazione Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Basso Sarca. For more information visit their website!

lake Terlago

Lake Terlago has a surface area of 0.35 km² and lies at 416 metres a.s.l., just 10 km from Trento. The abundance of vegetation and the presence of numerous superb fish species make it the richest ecosystem in Trentino and a paradise for stillwater anglers. Of karstic origin, the lake’s olive-brown colour – especially in the southernmost basin of the two Terlago lakes – is due to the varied flora that grows on the bed of the lake. Prepare to be surrounded by a riot of greenery! Along the lake shores can be found bathing beaches and coppices, but also perfect spots for casting artificial lures. While you wait for your float to sink, you might well see pike of all sizes, eels, perch, tench, chub, but also native lake trout! Do you prefer fishing for carp or for whitefish? This is the perfect lake for you! If you fancy angling in these waters, visit the website of the Associazione Pescatori Dilettanti Trentini.

Punta Larici Trekking - Lake Garda
lake Garda

With a surface area of 370 km², a depth of 350 metres, a Mediterranean climate and Alpine skylines, Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake: to the south it widens, while it is narrower to the north. The alternating breezes – the Pelèr, the stiff wind that blows from the north during the first twelve hours of the day, and the Ora, the wind that blows from midday to sunset – have made Garda Trentino an internationally famed sailing and surfing centre. Do you feel the urge to be carried along by the wind? On these waters you can enjoy sailing and windsurfing, but many other water sports besides. And you can of course indulge in the world’s finest activity – fishing! The most frequently caught fish in Lake Garda undoubtedly include trout, followed by whitefish, lake sardines, bleak, tench, chub and perch. But did you know that fishing is permitted along the Trentino shore of Lake Garda even without a licence or qualification?! So, prepare your fishing rig, choose your spot and cast your bait!
