A challenging ascent along the Tovo valley, over ups & downs with panoramic views of the upper lake

Along the ancient road that connected Arco with Treni (traces of carts can still be seen in some places) you reach two panoramic points on the upper lake: the first, at Croce di Bondiga, also affords a view of Mount Misone in all its grandeur. The second, the Belvedere that can be reached by descending from the Bocca di Tovo (look out for the small deviation on the right that can be seen near a lookout for hunters) offers a view that embraces the entire Busa (Riva Arco, Lake Garda) and a vantage point for admiring the Ledrensi Prealps (all the crests from the top of Mount Rocchetta, which also hosts the GardatrentinoTrail).

The descent from Bocca di Tovo alternates between very easy sections on wide forest paths and others that are steeper and more technical (the "cuts" in the forest and the whole fun final part of the descent, a single track through the woods).

The Val di Tovo road was the ancient road leading to Val Lomasona and it still has its original typical cobbled surface.

Directions

From the car park at the sports ground in Vigne, turn right to reach the little church in the village and from there climb along the olive grove to join the main road that heads up towards Padaro/San Giovanni al Monte. Go downhill to the left and shortly afterwards turn right towards Olif del Botes/Val di Tovo, continuing on the trail to the Croce di Bondiga, which you reach after a long climb along the Val di Tovo.

From the Croce di Bondiga, continue to the right uphill towards Bocca di Tovo and, after a cemented section, take the path on the right. When you reach MALGA TOVO, continue across the meadow and take the path that enters the forest you can see in front of you towards the Bocca. Continue along the forest road and keep to the right, which will lead you to a wide clearing in the woods. Take the trail you’ll see at the end of it. Keep to the right at the forks to land back on the path leading to Olif del Botes; before you get there, take the first diversion on the right and descend onto the tarmac road that leads back to Varignano and finally to the car park at Vigne.
