Sentinel of the Valle della Sarca
Those who go through the Valle della Sarca can’t help but notice Castel Drena and its lookout tower that stands out against the slopes covered in woodland behind it. The castle’s origins date back to the 12th century, when it was erected to guard and watch over the traffic along the river.
Its prime strategic position meant that the local lords contended for it at length, until the d’Arco family eventually succeeded in prevailing over the other contenders. The story of Castel Drena came to a sudden halt in 1703 when it was destroyed by the troops of General Vendome, responsible for the devastation of many a fort in Garda Trentino (Arco, Penede, Tenno).
Today the ruins of the castle host in its rooms exhibitions and events. Visitors can still climb to the top of the tower, no less than 25 off the ground, which affords a spectacular view of the Marocche and the Valle della Sarca.
