Exhibition of works by Italian painter Giovanni Segantini.
"Sole d'Autunno". The rediscovered masterpiece
exhibition project curated by Niccolò D'Agati
On the occasion of the acquisition of the work ‘Autumn Sun’, the Galleria Civica Giovanni Segantini and the Municipality of Arco present to the public Segantini's masterpiece in the setting of a new exhibition that highlights its centrality in the artist's pictorial research and its fundamental role in the evolution of Segantini's experimentation between the years of Brianza and the opening of the most intense phase of his activity after his move to the Grisons, when a renewed sense of colour and light imposes itself as the founding nucleus of a new aesthetic conception.
Exhibited for the last time in 1954, Autumn Sun represents one of the most experimental outcomes of Segantini's painting at the start of his stay in the canton of Graubünden near Savognin. To be read in continuity with the results achieved in the extreme work in Brianza, Alla Stanga (1885-1886, Rome, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna), the canvas was developed by the painter at a time when - thanks to the reflection stimulated by Vittore Grubicy - he was experimenting with an initial instinctive and non-systematic application of Divisionist drafting in Ave Maria a trasbordo.
Segantini himself, retracing the stages of his own research in 1898 in a letter to the critic and admirer Tumiati, placed the painting as the first moment of the path that defined his new manner: ‘With this intermezzo I began the second period by passing through the Grigioni Alps in Savognin. (B. Segantini, Scritti e lettere di G. Segantini, Bocca, Turin 1910, p. 104).
In this context, on the occasion of the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of Segantini's death, the Gallery intends to dedicate a focus centred on theuninterrupted bond that the city of Arco has always kept alive with the memory of the painter, starting from the commission of the monument to Leonardo Bistolfi, and which is renewed today with the purchase of a work that has finally been returned to the community and can be seen after seventy years since the last exhibition.
